Dam Failures Force Thousands to Evacuate in Michigan

Central Michigan Experiences Historic Flooding

About 10,000 residents about 140 miles north of Detroit were forced to evacuate after two dams failed Wednesday. Midland, Michigan, downstream from the dams, is home to a large Dow chemical facility and a Superfund toxic waste cleanup site.

The state of Michigan has received heavy rainfall this week—as much as half of a foot—thanks to tropical moisture supplied by Tropical Storm Arthur.
